Underprivileged Statistics in India

Data on poverty

According to recent studies, 8.4 crore Indians are poor as of 2017 down from 270 million in 2011. India is a developing country but poverty is still a big challenge. Approximately 80 Million people of India are living in extreme poverty. Approximately 17 million children in India work due to poverty. 50% of children in India don’t go to school because of poverty.

India has the highest rate of child marriage in the world. Indian girls get married at an early age and spend their whole life working in home for survival. Poor families often sell their children to contractors who promise productive jobs in the cities and the children end up being employed in brothels, hotels and domestic work.

Major states facing poverty in India are Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal.

According to an analysis, India'’'s middle class may have shrunk by 30% due to coronavirus, while the number of poor people earning less than 150 per day. More than 50% of Indian children are malnourished. Millions of children work to help their families in India because the adults do not have proper employment and income.

In India, less than half of children between the age 5 and 15 go to school. 75% of women in India were underage at the time of their wedding. More than 50% of girls in the age group of 5 to 10 years are illiterate. 152 million children around the world are still in child labor, out of which 73 million are in hazardous work.

According to a survey by GOI (Government of India), 95% of the children in the age group of 6-13 years are attending educational institutions, the corresponding figures for those in the age group of 14-17 years are 79.6 %. According to the census of India 2011, 10.1 million working children are in the age group of 5-14 years, out of whom 8.1 million are in rural areas mainly engaged in cultivation and agricultural labor.

UNESCO estimates based on the 2011 census, around 38.2 million children are “out of school”, which is 18.3 percent of the total children in the age group of 6-13 years.
